COOL

After a couple of weeks of a heat wave and finding it hard to remain cool I walked down memory lane, you know the "good ole days", or so they say. Yes I can remember all the ways one would try to cool down in the summer when the average family did not have air conditioning. I'm talking no window air conditioners or central air. Ok I admit I am old enough to recall.

The photo above shows a galvanized tub, which was used for alot of purposes, some used them for giving baths but they were also used as a cool down kiddie pool. Imagine that!!

Or my favorite as a child, a rotating lawn sprinkler. We would spend what seemed like hours running thru the spray, soaking our heads, and screaming at the top of our lungs with glee. Thats right no slip and slides back then.

 
Another joy was the fan, amazing what kids enjoy and turn into fun. Not only would you have a warm breeze, better than no breeze, blowing your way but you could make noises in front of it which came out the other side all garbled. Ahhh such innocent cheap entertainment.

Being an Antique Dealer I have sold many of these items thru the years as collectibles. Why would someone collect these, memories maybe, sentimental value, who knows other than the purchaser themselves. I can tell you this, it harkens to the day when things were made and meant to last. It amazes me how many of these still work as intended today when found.  Were they really helpful in keeping you cool? Barely, but the best options at the time and we were grateful to have and use.

Forgotten Sleeping Porches

Sleeping Porches were once very common and used as multi purpose spaces. Great way to have extra sleeping for a very large family and were also practical for use when having company. They were on the front,back,side or upper levels of  homes of all styles, in the city and the country. 

A great memory--grandma's sleeping porch. The sounds of the night crickets or frogs, cool breezes, and fresh air. In the winter, down covers and many handmade quilts, seeing your breath from the cold but feeling the warmth under all the covers. Ahh a relaxing afternoon nap maybe.

FACEBOOK FANS--BE AWARE

Since adding my business on Facebook I have increased the publics awareness to my Business. I work long and hard and for many hours on a regular basis to share with my fan base on Facebook. More than most small businesses I am aware of. I try to share my experience and knowledge because it not only draws customers to me and my business but also those in my community. I share the information to promote what I have available and to try to interest those whom normally might not be attracted to Antiques and Collectibles. I also promote things happening locally in the community for all to enjoy and experience.

Facebook has been a wonderful resource for these purposes and fits my advertising budget because all it cost is my time. Which I enjoyed sharing freely as long as it worked. I will have to reconsider now that facebook has opened itself to Wall Street and investors. Why you ask?!!

For every post I make on facebook now, it only reaches about 9% of my fan base. In other words with over 900 fans only 80 some of those fans receive my posts on their newsfeed!!! 
If I want more fans to see my posts it will cost me $5.00 every 400 fans. Sooo  it will cost me $10.00 for every 800 fans thereby costing me more than $10.00 for every post I make on Facebook to try to reach all my fans. THAT IS FOR NOW AND SURE TO INCREASE.
WOW that is pretty expensive advertising wouldn't you say!!!

Just liking a page on facebook no longer means you will see their posts on your newsfeed(home page) !! The only way around this issue is, if you want our posts sent to you, you must on a pretty regular basis click like , make a comment or share for most of the posts that we make. This holds true for all business pages you have liked. For every like,comment, or share on our posts the percent of fans that see that paticular post increases a tiny bit. So please if interested in our page and what we share, or as encouagement for me to continue making these posts occassionaly make your mark and help us get the word out. Depression Age Kitchen Glassware

Not just every dollar mattered but every penny did during the Great Depression starting around 1930 and continuing into the 1940's. Those that had money to spend did so sparingly and on necessary items that were made to endure the test of time. Depression era glassware was such an item, especially the kitchenware type which is what this post is about. Some of this glassware was given free in boxes of detergent, at a local gas station, etc. This was a great way to intoduce,promote to housewives what was available and also to promote,guarantee certain products were bought from certain individual companies regularly for their survival.

Some collectors prefer the glassware by certain manufacturers,patterns,or colors. Some collect because of their usability and endurance.  Others inherited a piece from Grandma and now are trying to complete a set. Whatever reason nothing brightens up a kitchen more, or reflects the everyday of times gone by in a fairly inexpensive manner. So pretty much the same factors sell these products today as in our past. Yes some pieces are very pricey but overall not.
